HANDS

HERE'S A STORY TOLD TO ME BY A MOUNTAIN MAN
ABOUT HOW HE HELD A PRECIOUS HAND
I’LL TELL IT TO YOU, AND WHEN I’M THROUGH,
I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I SAID, YOU'LL UNDERSTAND

He said,

"LAST NIGHT I HELD A LITTLE HAND
SO DAINTY AND SO SWEET
I THOUGHT MY HEART WOULD SURLY BURST
SO WILDLY IT DID BEAT

NO OTHER HAND INTO MY HEART
DID GREATER GLADNESS BRING
THAN THAT I HELD SO TIGHT LAST NIGHT
FOUR ACES AND A KING"

I Thought,

THAT’S REALLY CLEVER,
THEN I THOUGHT, NO, THAT’S SAD
THINK I’LL TELL HIM ABOUT THE HAND I HOLD
MAYBE SOME DAY HE’ll BE GLAD

I said,

"FRIEND, THE NAME OF THE GAME IS NOT THE SAME
AND THE STAKES DO NOT COMPARE
BUT WE ALL HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME OF LIFE
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF WHEN AND WHERE

WHAT YOU HOLD WOULD NEVER WIN
WHEN HELD AGAINST THIS HAND SO FINE
THE HAND I HOLD IS OH SO BOLD
YET GENTLE AND KIND

NOW I CAN FEEL STRENGTH PASSING RIGHT ON THROUGH
FROM HIS HANDS INTO MINE
AND I CAN KNOW FOR SURE THAT IT WAS PURE
WHEN THEY TURNED THAT WATER INTO WINE

AND IN YOUR HEART THE SADNESS WILL DEPART
AND GLADNESS THEY WILL BRING
IF YOU'LL HOLD HIS HAND AND UNDERSTAND
THAT’S THE HAND OF THE ALMIGHTY KING"
